AISI 304L

Low Carbon Version of 304

Material Overview

AISI 304L - Low Carbon Version of 304

Material Type

Type: Austenitic, low carbon variant of 304

Key Benefit: Prevents carbide precipitation during welding

Advantages Over 304

  • Superior Weldability: No sensitization in heat-affected zones
  • Thick Sections: Better for heavy-wall applications
  • High-Temperature Welding: Ideal for multi-pass welding
  • Corrosion Resistance: Maintains resistance in welded condition

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Strength: 485-690 MPa
Yield Strength: 170-310 MPa
Hardness: ~180 HB

Common Applications

  • Pressure vessels and tanks requiring welding
  • Welded pipelines and tubing systems
  • High-purity processing equipment
  • Chemical processing vessels
  • Cryogenic applications
  • Heavy fabricated structures

Processing Characteristics

  • Welding: Excellent - no post-weld heat treatment required
  • Carbide Precipitation: Minimal risk in 425-815°C range
  • Formability: Similar to 304, excellent cold working
  • Machinability: Good, similar to 304
